Dear Truman Families,

Welcome to the beginning of another school year!

I hope this letter finds you rested and ready to send your children back to school. We are very excited about the school year ahead! We are busy getting ready for the upcoming year and organizing for the first day of school which is Wednesday, August 31st. This letter will provide information to help you prepare for the start of school. To ease the transition, you might be sure your children adjust to school sleeping hours at least a week before school begins.

Please mark your calendars for the following events:

Back to School Open House Event: Tuesday, August 30 5:00-6:00 PM

This is a chance to find your student’s classroom, meet the teacher, and tour the building. Our fantastic PTA will be available to enroll new members; please be sure to meet them!

First Day of School: Wednesday, August 31 8:20 AM – 2:50 PM

The cafeteria will be open for breakfast at 8:00 AM. School begins at 8:20 AM.

Your child may eat breakfast at school. The cost is $.80 for students and $1.50 for adults. Lunch is $1.80 for students and $2.90 for adults.

Meals are free if you qualify for free or reduced meals—forms will be handed out the first week of school.

All first time Truman parents are invited to the “Cheers and Tears Breakfast” hosted by our PTA. Please see the attached information for details.

Classroom Placements: Your student’s classroom placement is listed on the inside of the letter on the top left; however, teachers will not be available for classroom visits without an appointment until our Back to School Event on August 30 from 5:00-6:00 PM.

Please note that classroom assignments are tentative at this time as they are based on enrollment projections from last spring. Because families move in and 2016-2017 Welcome Newsletter

out of the area over the summer, it is difficult to get an accurate count until school begins. It may become necessary to reassign students to different

classrooms. If this happens we will inform you as soon as possible. No placement changes will be made until the week of September 5.

Please be aware that all kindergarten classroom placements are tentative. We will be assessing all our kindergarten students the first two weeks of school and will make final classroom assignments once we have the classrooms balanced.

Student Arrival and Dismissal:

*Once students arrive, they are welcome to eat breakfast in the cafeteria. If they do not eat breakfast, they are to wait in classroom lines outside. Staff will be outside to assist students in finding their classroom lines. Students are not allowed inside the buildings until 8:20 to ensure supervision.

*Please refer to the map for drop off/pickup and parking procedures on the last page.

*Develop a transportation plan to and from school. If your children are walkers, be sure they know who they will be walking to and from school with. Students should not be on school grounds without an adult before 8:00 AM. We do not provide supervision before then. All kindergarten students are supervised in the cafeteria once they arrive.

*Students are escorted outside by their teachers at 2:50 PM. It is required that we are notified (preferably by note) if there is a change in your child’s transportation plan for that day. Otherwise we will send your child home according to the regular plan.

*Refer to the bus schedule included in the letter for route information. KINDERGARTEN, please fill out the bus transportation form on the back of the mailer and return to the office before the first day of school if you have not already completed the form during registration.

IMPORTANT – PLEASE READ – BUS TIPS:

 Locate your bus stop and practice walking back and forth from stop to home

 Be sure your child can recognize the bus stop from a car on the road

 Have your address and phone number in a small pocket of the backpack so your child can show the bus driver if unsure

Here’s to exciting new beginnings and a year filled with learning and growing,

Theresa David-Turner
